Are Plurals Derived or Stored?

چکیده

The role that lexical storage and computation play in the processing ofmorphologically complex words is highly debated. Thus far, studies that contrastthese processes have yielded widely varying results. At present, three viewpointspredominate: (1) the full storage model, in which all known words are storedseparately in the mental lexicon, (2) the full parsing model, in which all complexforms are parsed into constituent morphemes, and (3) the dual-route model, inwhich some words are parsed while others are accessed as wholes. In two experiments utilizing a lexical decision task, the influence ofcumulative and individual frequency on Spanish noun plurals and singulars wastested. In each experiment, native Spanish speakers were asked to identify visuallypresented words and non-words. The first experiment involved discriminatingbetween plural nouns and plural non-words. The second experiment replicated thefirst except that singular forms were used. The results were compared to findings of previous studies of plurals in English,Dutch, Italian, and Spanish. Contrary to an earlier study of Spanish, The presentstudy supports a dual-route race model in which direct access wins the race forplurals. Reaction times to singulars, on the other hand, were influenced bycumulative frequency, indicating that both the singular and plural forms areactivated during recognition of singulars.

Morpho-syntactic processing of Arabic plurals after aphasia: dissecting lexical meaning from morpho-syntax within word boundaries.

Within the domain of inflectional morpho-syntax, differential processing of regular and irregular forms has been found in healthy speakers and in aphasia. One view assumes that irregular forms are retrieved as full entities, while regular forms are compiled on-line. An alternative view holds that a single mechanism oversees regular and irregular forms. Arabic offers an opportunity to study this...

The Time-Course of Morphological Constraints:

The avoidance of regular but not irregular plurals inside compounds (e.g. *rats eater vs. mice eater) has been one of the most widely studied morphological phenomena in the psycholinguistics literature. To examine whether the constraints that are responsible for this contrast have any general significance beyond compounding, we investigated derived word forms containing regular and irregular pl...

Iranian EFL Learners' Processing of English Derived Words

An interesting area of psycholinguistic inquiry is to discover the way morphological structures are stored in the human mind and how they are retrieved during comprehension or production of language. The current study probed into what goes on in the mind of EFL learners when processing derivational morphology and how English and Persian derivational suffixes are processed. 60 Iranian EFL learne...

Input driven constraints on plurals in English noun-noun compounds

Native English speakers include irregular plurals in English noun-noun compounds (e.g. mice chaser) more frequently than regular plurals (e.g. *rats chaser) (Gordon, 1985). This dissociation in inflectional morphology has been argued to stem from an internal and innate morphological constraint as it is thought that the input to which English speaking children are exposed is insufficient to sign...

Acoustic investigations into the later acquisition of syllabic -es plurals.

PURPOSE Children acquire /-z/ syllabic plurals (e.g., bus es) later than /-s, -z/ segmental plurals (e.g., cat s, dog s). In this study, the authors explored whether increased syllable number or segmental factors best explains poorer performance with syllabic plurals. METHOD An elicited imitation experiment was conducted with 14 two-year-olds involving 8 familiar disyllabic target plural noun...
